Enabling digital transformation in traditional industries

This targeted technical assistance programme, funded by the UK government, aimed to accelerate digital adoption in Tunisia’s agrifood and textiles sectors by enabling collaboration between traditional manufacturers and domestic technology providers.

Although Tunisia benefits from a growing local technology ecosystem, many traditional small and medium-sized enterprises faced significant barriers to digital adoption. These included limited awareness of digital solutions, risk aversion, unclear collaboration pathways with technology providers, and restricted access to capital for testing and piloting new systems.

The programme worked closely with four established Tunisian manufacturers to diagnose operational challenges and identify practical digital solutions. Pilot implementations were delivered across areas such as sensor-based tracking, centralised IT systems, and automated quality control processes. To reduce risk and encourage adoption, initial implementation costs were fully covered, allowing companies to validate the value of digital solutions before committing further investment.

The programme delivered measurable impact, with participating companies achieving efficiency gains of up to twenty-five percent. These improvements generated meaningful cost savings, which were reinvested into further digital upgrades. In addition, the programme helped establish a long-term Industry 4.0 partnership to support sustained digital transformation in Tunisia.

This case study was specifically adapted to Tunisia’s industrial context, SME constraints, and local financing and adoption realities.
